Bonding without Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding can be a bonding experiences but it isn’t the only way to bond with a baby.

What if I am not the breastfeeding parent or caregiver? What if I’ve chosen not to breastfeed or were unable to? Is it possible to bond with the baby without breastfeeding?

YES! It is totally possible to bond with the baby and form attachments without breastfeeding. Dads, partners, siblings, grandparents, friends and other family members can form a bond with the baby but it may look different than bonding by breastfeeding. Here are some FREE & Assessible ideas:

  • Skin to Skin: It’s not just for the breastfeeding parent. Skin to Skin interactions have great benefits such as emotional bonding, temperature and breathing regulation, and building the baby’s sense of physical security. All you need is to have the baby’s clothes off (can wear a diaper) and a bare chest for the baby to lay on. Some ideas of when/where to do this are: in a sling or wrap while doing chores around the house, while watching tv or reading, while feeding from a bottle.

  • Infant Massage: Infant massage is great for a baby and they love it! Gentle massage can aid in digestion and help a baby relax to sleep.

  • Changing Diapers: Changing diapers is a great way to bond with a baby many times a day! It shows your baby that YOU are there for their needs too.

  • Responding to Baby’s Needs: Babies have many physical, social, and emotional needs. Responding to their cues or needs helps establish a trusting relationship.

  • Communicating with Baby: Talking, singing and making facial expressions with your baby help build a connection with your baby. Even though they may not understand what you are saying, they enjoy hearing your voice and feeling connected with you. BONUS: Smiling at your baby can help them develop the ability to smile back at you.

Get creative with your own unique ways of bonding with your baby! There are plenty of activities that don’t involve breastfeeding.
